It was harrowing to watch the video evidence presented yesterday in the impeachment trial capturing the imminent danger to the Capitol police, staff, legislators and congressional leaders on January 6th. Calls of “hang Mike Pence,” and “where is Nancy,” rang through the halls as insurrectionists hunted their intended victims. Staff (mostly young people) hid in closets, under desks, and in conference rooms. Five people died, including three police officers, and more than 140 officers were injured defending the Capitol, staff and members of Congress.
It was equally disturbing to hear the overwhelming evidence of then-president Trump’s personal involvement in the call to bring his followers to Washington to stop the certification of the election, his direction to march to the Capitol “to stop the counting,” his admonition to “fight like hell,” and his attacks on the Vice President. And then—finally that day—evidence of his refusal to send aid to Congress or seek to stop the riot. President Trump incited that violence, reveled in it, and utterly failed as Commander-in-chief to stop it.
If this is not sedition, what is?
This is a non-partisan matter, and no partisan benefit is worth the price of our democracy. Our founders risked their fortunes, indeed their lives, to establish our nation. Now you must live up to our founders’ vision of America and your oath of office. Vote to convict.
