Congress Must Protect America’s Intelligence Operations From Political Pressure

Protect The Independence Of America’s Intelligence Agencies
The independence of the United States intelligence community (IC) is in danger, and that danger threatens every American. Political pressure, job cuts, and canceled security clearances are weakening the agencies that protect our country from terrorism, cyberattacks, and foreign interference. When intelligence is shaped by politics instead of facts, both democracy and national security are at risk. Every Member of Congress - Republican, Democrat, or Independent - must act before lasting damage is done.
Address The Erosion Of Checks And Balances
The Steady State, a group of more than 330 former national security officials, warns that vital checks and balances are being weakened. Their letters to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) urge Congress to defend the independence and integrity of the intelligence community and restore public trust in its work. When political loyalty replaces truth, the nation loses the clear judgment that intelligence agencies were created to provide.
Reverse Politicization
Staff cuts and reorganizations at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and revoked security clearances appear politically motivated. Former officials warn these moves could make it harder for agencies to share information and detect threats early. If professionals are pushed out or silenced, the United States becomes more vulnerable both at home and abroad.
Prevent Negative Consequences For National Security
When politics drives intelligence work, mistakes multiply, warnings go unheard, and public trust collapses. That climate invites misinformation, foreign manipulation, and strategic surprise. Americans deserve professional, fact-based intelligence that stands firm no matter who holds office.
Actions Congress Must Take
1. Hold public and private hearings to review the independence of intelligence agencies.
2. Order an interagency report on political pressure, clearance actions, and the performance of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), and the National Intelligence Council (NIC).
3. Strengthen whistleblower protections and support the independence of Inspectors General (IGs).
4. Require clear public reporting so citizens can see which actions are genuine reforms and which are acts of political payback.
5. Create safeguards that keep intelligence free from political control while respecting presidential powers.
Act To Renew Public Trust
America depends on honest intelligence that puts facts before politics. Congress must act now to protect those who gather and report the truth, rebuild confidence, and keep these vital institutions strong for every administration. The safety of the nation - and the strength of our democracy - depend on your leadership.
