An open letter to the U.S. Congress

No more detention centers!

36 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am deeply concerned about the massive budget for DHS. Some of that money is supposed to go to building massive detention centers. We don’t want or need the centers! The ones we already have are being poorly run with inhumane conditions. They function as profit centers for private corporations that try to maximize profits by holding people longer than needed and leaving them in poor conditions with unsafe food, water, no heating or cooling, and inadequate medical care as well as no or limited access to family and legal counsel. This detention policy skirts the law and is being abused to terrorize immigrants and citizens of color or citizens who speak up for immigrants. Detainees are suffering rape and torture in these vastly unmonitored prisons. No money for DHS! No more detention centers! Demand due process and legal representation for all!
