Yesterday, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, an unarmed man, was shot and killed in his vehicle by ICE agents in Biddeford, Maine. The statement released by the DHS today indicates clearly that the agents involved were not in fear for their lives, and video evidence suggests likewise, that Guerrero proved no immediate threat to the lives of the agents involved, or any other person in the vicinity of the shooting. Stated simply, the shooting was a cruel abuse of power by a federal law enforcement agent operating with presumed impunity.
These events echo the similarly chilling and unjustifiable shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti earlier this year, neither of which the DHS or ICE has faced any consequences for. The constant contradictions, evasion of responsibility, and backtracked lies coming from within the DHS and ICE are not only alarming, but directly harmful to the American public, who the DHS is beholden to.
It is clear that ICE is not operating under the interest of the American people. The killing of innocent people by an agency whose stated intention is to protect and serve them is antithetical not only to the stated objective of the agency, but to American liberty as a whole.
It is paramount that as a representative of the Congress of the United States of America, you do everything within your legal power to halt the abuse of power by ICE agents, and by the administration officials responsible for enabling it. Investigations, injunctions, and fierce legal actions must be taken to ensure accountability for those responsible, and ICE as an agency should be abolished for failing to serve the interests of the American public.
