Please Vote in Favor of Amendment #682

I am writing as a constituent from Pembroke to respectfully urge you to support Amendment #682 to “An Act relative to economic development in the Commonwealth” (H.5562) when it comes before the House tomorrow. Amendment #682, based on the Universal Changing Tables legislation (H.256/S.102), will ensure that newly constructed, reconstructed, or remodeled public buildings and places of public accommodation include at least one universal changing station in an enclosed restroom. Many children, adults, and older adults with disabilities or complex medical needs cannot fully participate in community life because public restrooms lack appropriate, adult‑sized changing facilities. Standard baby changing tables are not designed to safely support older children or adults, forcing families and caregivers to change their loved ones on restroom floors, in vehicles, or to avoid community outings altogether because there is nowhere safe or dignified to provide necessary care. Universal changing tables provide a safe, dignified, and hygienic solution that allows people with disabilities to fully participate in work, recreation, tourism, shopping, and community life. The amendment requires that these stations be height‑adjustable and capable of supporting at least 350 pounds, located in ADA‑compliant restroom spaces, and clearly marked with signage and public directory listings so individuals and families can plan their outings and locate accessible facilities before they travel. It also allows reasonable exemptions for historically significant buildings or locations where installation is not feasible, balancing accessibility with practical constraints. By removing a significant barrier to community participation, Amendment #682 advances the core goals of the economic development bill: creating communities where everyone can participate in local businesses, tourism, recreation, and public life. True economic development is not just about incentives and infrastructure; it is about ensuring that residents and visitors with disabilities and medically complex needs can be present in public spaces, patronize local businesses, and contribute fully to our civic and economic life. Adopting this amendment will strengthen Massachusetts’ commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunity while making our public spaces more welcoming for all. People with disabilities deserve access to safe, private, and hygienic restroom facilities wherever they live, work, and travel. As your constituent, I ask you to stand with families, caregivers, and individuals with disabilities across the Commonwealth by voting YES on Amendment #682 to H.5562 and actively voicing your support to House leadership.
