Please sign the The Hospital Transparency Act (S1003A/A733A). In New York, we have no idea which hospitals will give us the care we need or which will turn us away from seeking abortion, contraception, miscarriage management, gender-affirming care, end-of-life care, and more. NY private hospitals are replacing public hospitals, and some of them--too many of them--deny certain these essential types of health care. The hospitals are hiding these facts from potential patients (your constituents).
The Hospital Transparency Act will require the DOH to publicly report on service denials and the impacts of these denials, with a focus on variations in access based on community, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. “The current policies…are often shrouded in secrecy and create health care deserts that can leave New Yorkers with nowhere to turn. With abortion access and gender-affirming care under attack nationwide, our lawmakers are taking action to empower patients with the information they need, identify health care deserts, and close the health care gap – Governor Hochul must do the same.” (Allie Bohm, Senior Policy Counsel at NYCLU).
The Act does not force these hospitals to provide the care. It simply demands they come clean about what they do not provide so patients can make informed decisions and lawmakers can identify “care deserts” and close those gaps.
As a New Yorker, I urge you to sign the Hospital Transparency Act. I agree with Senator Hinchey when she says “New Yorkers need to know what healthcare services are available at their local hospital and whether essential services like reproductive care have been removed from their community due to hospital policies.”
We are entitled to know which services are not offered at a hospital before we seek medical attention. Please sign!
