President Trump's proposal to rename Veterans Day as "Victory Day for World War I" and establish a separate "Victory Day for World War II" on May 8 is misguided and disrespectful to the service and sacrifices of our nation's veterans across all conflicts. Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, not just those from the World Wars. Changing this longstanding tradition diminishes the recognition owed to millions of veterans from other eras like Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, and the ongoing Global War on Terror. Moreover, instituting a "Victory Day" celebration specifically for World War II is problematic given that the proposed date of May 8 predates the actual end of that conflict by nearly four months when fighting continued in the Pacific theater until September 2, 1945. Over 400,000 American troops made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II alone. Their memory and service deserve to be honored appropriately on the correct commemorative dates. I urge you to reconsider this ill-conceived plan that fails to properly acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our veterans throughout history. Supporting and respecting all who have worn the uniform should be a unifying cause, not an opportunity for needless controversy. Our veterans have earned the right to have their service celebrated on the day set aside to honor their courage and commitment - Veterans Day.
