Urgent: Defend Climate Action from Antitrust Overreach

As a concerned constituent deeply invested in the health of our planet and our economy, I am writing to express my unequivocal opposition to the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust investigation targeting organizations that are pivotal in securing corporate action on climate change.
At a juncture where the urgency to address the climate crisis has never been more apparent, it is disheartening to see the U.S. House Judiciary Committee misuse its authority to hinder the efforts of shareholder representatives such as As You Sow and thirteen other organizations. These entities have been instrumental in advocating for meaningful climate action within the corporate sector, thereby safeguarding not only our environment but also the economic stability of countless Americans.
The committee's assertion that pushing for reduced carbon pollution infringes upon American freedoms is not only baseless but dangerously misinformed. It overlooks the tangible, devastating impacts of climate change on our communities: superstorms, wildfires, floods, and droughts that have not only claimed homes but also escalated the cost of living through heightened insurance premiums and the reduced availability of essential commodities like wheat, sugar, and cotton.
In 2023 alone, the United States witnessed 28 climate-related disasters with costs amounting to $92.9 billion—an undeniable testament to the economic fallout from insufficient climate action. It is imperative to recognize that the actions taken by As You Sow and similar organizations are not just about environmental stewardship but are also critical measures to mitigate inflationary pressures driven by catastrophic weather events and volatile fossil fuel markets.
The ongoing investigation by the House Judiciary Committee is a glaring attempt to stifle progress towards a sustainable, net-zero emissions economy under the guise of protecting competitive markets. This effort not only jeopardizes our collective fight against climate change but also undermines the democratic principles that allow individuals and investors to advocate for a responsible, forward-thinking corporate sector.
I urge you to publicly denounce this investigation and to support initiatives that promote transparency, accountability, and proactive climate action within the corporate world. Moreover, I encourage your participation in the Sustainable Investment Caucus, standing in solidarity with those who prioritize our planet's health and our economic resilience.
Our commitment to combating climate change and transitioning to a sustainable economy should not be hindered by political agendas that serve the interests of a few at the expense of the many. I trust that you will act in the best interest of your constituents and our future generations.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
