I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent actions taken by the administration to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Reports indicate that USAID staff have been instructed to avoid their Washington headquarters following announcements that President Trump, in agreement with Elon Musk, has decided to shut down the agency.
This move has led to over 600 employees being locked out of their computer systems and the abrupt removal of USAID’s website. Such actions not only disrupt critical humanitarian and development programs worldwide but also raise significant legal and constitutional questions. The sudden nature of these decisions has left numerous aid projects in limbo, potentially affecting millions who rely on U.S. assistance.
Furthermore, the administration’s recent freeze on foreign aid has already compelled many organizations to halt operations and lay off staff, exacerbating global instability and diminishing America’s standing as a leader in international development.
I urge you to take immediate action to address this situation. It is imperative that Congress exercises its oversight authority to ensure that any decisions of this magnitude undergo proper legislative scrutiny. The unilateral dismantling of USAID sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the foundational principles of our democratic governance.
Please advocate for the restoration of USAID’s operations and uphold the checks and balances that are essential to our nation’s integrity.
