An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Investigate Pay-for-Play

11 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am writing to urge you to actively support and publicly amplify the oversight efforts led by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) addressing apparent pay-to-play risks and conflicts of interest involving wealthy donors and the Trump administration.   Recent reporting by The New York Times documents that hundreds of large post-election donors to President Trump have subsequently benefited through federal pardons, regulatory changes, enforcement decisions, contracts, or other government actions. While such reporting does not itself establish criminal conduct, it raises serious and credible concerns about whether public power is being used to reward political benefactors rather than serve the public interest.   Congress has a clear constitutional responsibility to investigate these matters in aid of its legislative and oversight functions. Senator Warren and Representative Garcia have taken important initial steps by proposing legislation and drawing attention to donor-driven influence that risks undermining ethical governance and public trust.   I respectfully ask that you:   1. Publicly support and defend the oversight work of Sen. Warren and Rep. Garcia, including speaking clearly to the press and the public about why these concerns warrant investigation.  2. Call for the scope of congressional inquiry to be broadened to include the full range of issues identified in The New York Times reporting, including post-election donations followed by pardons, regulatory relief, contracts, or reduced enforcement.  3. Encourage relevant committees to use their full oversight authorities, including hearings, document requests, and subpoenas if necessary, to determine whether legislative reforms are needed to prevent pay-to-play abuses.   This is not a partisan request. It is a request for transparency, accountability, and the preservation of public confidence in democratic institutions. Regardless of party or president, Americans deserve assurance that government decisions are made in the public interest, not in exchange for political donations.   Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your service to the public.
