I am writing to express my deep concern regarding former President Trump’s recent announcement of a task force led by Pam Bondi to “eradicate anti-Christian bias.” This is a direct threat to the constitutional separation of church and state and an alarming step toward government overreach into religious affairs. I urge you to take action to protect all Americans—Christians and non-Christians alike—from the encroachment of Christian nationalism into our government.
Trump’s remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast reveal his intent to wield federal power to enforce a specific brand of Christianity. His assertion that this task force will “halt all forms of anti-Christian targeting and discrimination” within independent federal agencies such as the DOJ, IRS, and FBI is an attempt to weaponize religion for political gain. This is an attack on the First Amendment and a move toward religious authoritarianism.
What was once about protecting Christian nationalists from discrimination is now about prosecuting those who do not align with their ideology. Government resources may soon be used to silence or punish those with differing religious or secular beliefs. The establishment of this task force is not about religious freedom—it is about consolidating power and using religion as a tool for division.
The presence of individuals like Paulette Harlow, convicted for blocking access to an abortion clinic and later pardoned by Trump, raises concerns about the intent behind this initiative. Will law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and educators be labeled as perpetrators of “anti-Christian violence” for simply upholding the law or teaching scientific facts?
We have already seen the effects of this agenda: the removal of LGBTQ+ protections from government websites, targeting of federal employees not aligned with religious nationalism, and the erosion of secular governance. The America that John F. Kennedy envisioned, one where church and state are separate, is under attack.
I urge you to:
1 Oppose any federal efforts to establish religiously motivated task forces with prosecutorial power.
2 Uphold the independence of agencies like the DOJ, IRS, and FBI.
3 Protect religious minorities, secular Americans, and Christians who reject Christian nationalist ideology.
4 Denounce efforts to blur the lines between church and state and uphold the First Amendment.
Religious liberty demands that government remain neutral in matters of faith. I ask you to fight for the freedoms that protect all Americans from religious persecution—whether they are Christians who reject nationalism, people of other faiths, or secular citizens.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to your response and your leadership in protecting our democracy from religious extremism.
