An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress; State Governors & Legislatures

DOGE is NOT presidential records & should be open to public and judicial review

It is deeply concerning that the White House has designated Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as an entity exempt from public records requests and judicial intervention until 2034 under the Presidential Records Act. This lack of transparency undermines democratic principles and accountability. DOGE wields immense influence over government operations and spending, making it imperative that its work is subject to public scrutiny. Shielding DOGE's documents and communications from disclosure obstructs the public's right to information and hinders oversight. As DOGE aims to overhaul government procedures, its activities must be open to review to ensure reforms prioritize public interests over private agendas. Classifying DOGE under the Presidential Records Act severely limits transparency and erodes trust in government integrity. This decision should be reconsidered to uphold open government values and allow for meaningful public participation in DOGE's endeavors. Transparency promotes better governance and serves the best interests of all citizens.
