An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Appointees should be qualified not loyalists.

The recent appointment of the 22-year-old Thomas Fugate as the new chief of the Homeland Security Department's Cyber Situational Awareness branch raises serious concerns about the administration's priorities. Mr. Fugate's background as a former gardener and grocery store assistant does not seem to align with the critical responsibilities of this role in safeguarding national security against cyber threats. This decision appears to prioritize personal loyalty over qualifications and expertise, which could potentially compromise the nation's ability to effectively counter cyber attacks and terrorism. A position of such importance demands a candidate with substantial experience, technical knowledge, and a proven track record in cybersecurity. The American people deserve assurances that their safety is being entrusted to competent and qualified individuals, not political favors.
