Oppose Renaming Harvey Milk Boulevard in Salt Lake City

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal by Representative Trevor Lee to rename Harvey Milk Boulevard in Salt Lake City to 'Charlie Kirk Boulevard'. This attempt to erase the legacy of an important civil rights figure is misguided and oversteps the bounds of state legislative authority.
Harvey Milk Boulevard serves as a meaningful tribute to the first openly gay elected official in California, who fought tirelessly for LGBTQ+ rights. Changing this name would not only dishonor Milk's contributions to civil rights but also send a negative message to our LGBTQ+ community members in Salt Lake City.
It's crucial to note that the naming of city streets typically falls under the jurisdiction of local governments, not state legislators. Rep. Lee's proposal appears to infringe upon Salt Lake City's autonomy in managing its own affairs. If Rep. Lee wishes to honor Charlie Kirk, it would be more appropriate for him to propose such a change within his own district, respecting the established processes for street naming.
This proposal seems to be an unnecessary and divisive action that does not address any pressing issues facing our state. Instead of focusing on symbolic gestures that could potentially harm community relations, I urge you to redirect efforts towards addressing real challenges such as education, healthcare, and economic development that affect all Utahns.
I respectfully request that you oppose any legislation aimed at renaming Harvey Milk Boulevard and instead advocate for preserving local government authority in such matters. Please stand with the residents of Salt Lake City in maintaining this important symbol of progress and inclusivity in our community.
