The supplication of an American president to a war criminal continues. Instead of the tough sanctions promised by Trump against Russia for its barbaric actions in Ukraine, Putin instead gets an invitation to a summit. On American soil.
That is offering not only an olive branch, but the whole tree, to a person who has consistently, successfully played cat and mouse with our diplomatic envoys, and the president.
Trump is Charlie Brown. Putin is Lucy. And Russia withdrawing from Ukraine is the football. Rinse. Repeat.
But this time, for certain, Trump promises, “It’s very complicated. But we're going to get some [territory] back, and we're going to get some switched. There'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we'll be talking about that either later, or tomorrow."
Trump fails to grasp the concept of loyalty to one’s country, and that not everything is just a real estate deal to be worked out.
Putin wants what Russia once was. And he’s not to be placated by compromise.
Ukraine wants its country back. Zelensky has led his country through three years of brutal and devastating war. He is unlikely to betray his country and Constitution at this late date. Especially with such an unreliable negotiator as Putin.
And possibly our president as well.
“Russian troops are not going to make any step backward,” said Sergei Markov, a pro-Kremlin analyst.
Russia’s main interest in the summit, he said, was to cast Ukraine and Europe as obstacles to Trump’s dream of brokering peace.
“Russia hopes that Trump will finally become sensible and see that Zelensky is the main reason for the war that is happening now, and that the second reason for the war is European leaders … and that they are his enemies too,” Markov said. Trump will see that “Putin is one of his few good political friends.”
Based on Trump’s personality, sounds like a workable plan. For Russia.
Sad.
