An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Abolish ICE and Release Detainees After Austin Shooting

535 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!

Abolish ICE. The shooting of Wilber Rafael Garces Perez in Austin — a 28-year-old DoorDash driver shot in the torso while on a delivery — is not an aberration. It is the agency functioning exactly as designed. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. Johan Sebastián in Maine. Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota. This is a pattern, and the pattern is the policy. Now HSI, a division of ICE itself, is leading the investigation into its own agency's conduct. The FBI has been sidelined. Garces Perez's wife was denied information about his condition for hours and physically removed from the hospital property. This is not a broken agency that needs reform. It is an agency that needs to be shut down permanently, and every person currently held in ICE detention needs to be released. I expect you to say so publicly and to push for legislation that does exactly that.
