Pass a Strong State Voting Rights Act to Protect All Voters

I am writing to ask you to introduce and champion a comprehensive State Voting Rights Act that safeguards the fundamental right to vote for every resident of our state.
Why this is urgent:
Persistent barriers – Black voters and other voters of color continue to confront unfair district maps, at‑large elections, inequitable polling locations, language‑access gaps, intimidation, misinformation, and aggressive voter‑roll purges.
National trend – Over the past three years, states such as Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, New York, and others have successfully enacted VRAs, showing that strong state‑level protections are both feasible and effective.
Broad public support – A 2024 poll found that 78 % of voters—across race and party lines—support a voting‑rights act in their state.
Key provisions a State VRA should include:
Prohibit voter‑suppression tactics and require clear, equitable voting procedures.
Ban vote‑dilution practices, especially at‑large elections that drown out minority voices.
Establish pre‑clearance for any changes to voting rules in jurisdictions with a history of discrimination.
Strengthen language‑access services so limited‑English‑proficiency voters can fully participate.
Create a statewide public database of election and demographic data to ensure transparency.
What I’m asking you to do:
Introduce legislation that incorporates the five core elements listed above.
Engage community stakeholders, including civil‑rights groups, election officials, and everyday voters, to shape the bill.
Commit to a public hearing within the next legislative session so constituents can voice support and share personal stories of voting challenges.
Passing a State Voting Rights Act will protect our democracy, reduce disenfranchisement, and align our state with the growing national movement toward fairer elections.
Thank you for your leadership on this critical issue. I look forward to seeing your commitment to voting equity reflected in upcoming legislation.
