Hold Elon Musk and xAI Accountable for Pollution and Corruption in Memphis

I'm writing to express deep concern about recent reports that xAI, a company owned by Elon Musk, is operating a facility in South Memphis using 35 methane gas turbines—without the proper air pollution permits. These turbines reportedly emit more nitrogen oxides than any other source in the area, yet the company has skirted regulation by falsely designating them as temporary equipment.
This isn’t just a local issue. It reflects a larger pattern of corporate overreach, environmental injustice, and the disturbing influence of billionaires over federal policy. If powerful individuals can bypass environmental laws without consequence, no community in the country is safe from similar exploitation.
What’s especially troubling is the reporting that federal officials rewrote environmental guidance to benefit Musk’s business—allowing this facility to avoid scrutiny and legal oversight. This sets a dangerous precedent and calls into question the integrity of the Clean Air Act’s enforcement.
I am asking you to:
- Launch a federal investigation into the permitting and oversight process for xAI’s Memphis operations;
- Enforce EPA regulations fully and equitably, especially in historically marginalized communities like South Memphis;
- Pursue consequences for any political interference or regulatory favoritism that led to this environmental harm.
Communities like South Memphis—predominantly Black and already overburdened by pollution—should not be sacrificed for the convenience or profit of the ultra-wealthy. I am watching closely how this issue is handled. Your response will shape my vote.
Please take action now to uphold environmental justice and the rule of law.
