An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect Our National Parks - No Unnecessary Border Wall in Big Bend NP

774 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!

I am your constituent. I am pleading with you to protect our national parks and public lands from unnecessary and irreversible damage caused by border wall construction, especially in the Big Bend National Park area. Our national parks are not expendable. They belong to all of us, and once their landscapes are destroyed, wildlife corridors fragmented, archaeological resources damaged, and natural views permanently scarred by industrial infrastructure, we cannot simply put them back the way they were. The Greater Big Bend region is a perfect example. Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Black Gap Wildlife Management Area, Seminole Canyon State Park, and surrounding public and private lands contain some of the most spectacular and intact landscapes in Texas. The Rio Grande, desert ecosystems, wildlife habitat, and cultural resources are irreplaceable. Please do not allow these places to be sacrificed for a wall that is completely unnecessary in this rugged terrain. And please consider the enormous economic consequences. The outdoor recreation and tourism economy depends on people coming to experience these landscapes as they are—wild, beautiful, peaceful, and protected. Visitors spend money on hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, outfitters, guides, gas stations, shops, and countless small businesses throughout the region. Tourism supports jobs and provides a critical economic lifeline to communities that cannot simply replace that revenue if their greatest natural attraction is damaged. Destroying the very landscape that drives tourism is not border security. It is economic self-sabotage. There are better ways to secure the border without bulldozing roads through pristine landscapes, disrupting wildlife, damaging cultural resources, and permanently altering our national parks. Modern technology, strategically placed infrastructure, personnel, and intelligence-driven enforcement can protect our border without sacrificing America’s natural heritage. I am asking you—please stand up for our national parks. Please stand up for the communities and businesses that depend on them. Please stand up for future generations who deserve to see these places as we see them today. Reject any unnecessary border wall construction through or near our national parks and protected public lands. Do not allow short-term political priorities to cause permanent damage to treasures that belong to every American. Our national parks cannot speak for themselves. Please be their voice—and protect them before it is too late.
