An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Eliminate earning limits to SS taxes.

I am writing to express my strong support for the elimination of the earnings limit subject to Social Security payroll taxes. This measure is critical for ensuring the long-term viability of the Social Security program and promoting a fairer economic landscape for all Americans. Currently, the earnings cap restricts the amount of income that is subject to Social Security payroll taxes at $160,200. While this policy was initially designed to protect the program's funding, it has inadvertently created inequities in our social safety net. By removing this cap, we can ensure that high earners contribute their fair share into the system, which is particularly vital as our population ages and the ratio of workers to beneficiaries continues to decline. Eliminating the earnings limit would have several significant benefits: 1. **Increased Funding for Social Security**: By taxing all income, we would significantly boost the Social Security Trust Fund, ensuring its solvency for future generations. This additional revenue could help address the projected shortfalls and maintain benefits for current and future retirees. 2. **Equity and Fairness**: The current system disproportionately benefits higher earners who pay a lower percentage of their income into Social Security. Removing the earnings cap would create a more equitable tax structure, ensuring that everyone contributes a fair share based on their earnings. 3. **Stimulating Economic Growth**: With more funds flowing into Social Security, we can stimulate demand by maintaining or increasing benefit levels for retirees. This, in turn, can provide a vital economic boost, as retirees tend to spend their benefits on essential goods and services. 4. **Addressing Inequality**: In a time when economic inequality is at the forefront of national discourse, this policy change would help level the playing field, allowing for a more inclusive economy where all citizens contribute to and benefit from social programs. I urge you to champion the elimination of the earnings limit on Social Security payroll taxes. This initiative is not just about funding; it is about fairness, sustainability, and the collective responsibility we share for the well-being of our citizens.
