An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Swear in rep-elect Adelita Grijalva.
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I reached out to your office with concerns about Democratic Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva’s constituents, who have been without representation for more than 2 weeks since she won a special election to represent Arizona’s Seventh Congressional District in the US House of Representatives.
You responded: “Representative-elect Grijalva’s election took place while the House was out of session, and due to the recent shutdown of the federal government by Congressional Democrats, she has not been sworn in yet. Speaker Johnson has stated that she will be sworn in as soon as the House is back in full session, which will likely not be until federal funding has been renewed and the shutdown ends.”
This makes little sense for 2 reasons.
1. Members of congress still get paid during the shutdown. Johnson has sent you all home for some reason, but there’s no other reason you all can’t be in session, swearing her in, and getting to work on a CR that will actually pass.
2. Recall that in April, 2 GOP house members won their special elections and were sworn in *the next day*.
This doesn’t add up and you know it. Start putting pressure on Johnson to swear her in. Her constituents deserve representation.
