Unemployment means that there are too many workers and not enough jobs. When companies face that problem they often offer their oldest employees a buyout. I am thinking that might be a good idea for the country to do. I’ll use myself as an example. I am 63 and unemployed. I get unemployment, which has been extended twice. I am actually getting more money that what I would earn on Social Security, but I am paying a fortune for health insurance so that may be a wash. I have been looking for a new job, but I’m older, my wife isn’t in the greatest of health, so I don’t want to take a job that would expose me to Covid. So, I am being picky, but eventually the pandemic will end and unemployment compensation will end, and I will have to take something to get health insurance. There are lots of people like me. Why not make a change in Social Security for a year to allow people over 60 to get their Social Security early. I might choose to retire and thus take myself off the unemployment rolls. I am also going to need health insurance, so we would also need to reduce the eligibility age for Medicare down to 60. I don’t think either of these changes will hurt the programs because we have lost a lot of seniors over the last year and that should result in a bit of a windfall for Social Security. Many want to bring down the Medicare age and this would be a great reason to take the first step.
