An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Halt privatization of public duties and resources

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The privatization of public funds and responsibilities is a deeply concerning trend that undermines democratic principles and accountability. Private companies driven by profit motives should not be entrusted with crucial duties that impact our national security. For example, privatization of prisons incentivizes maximizing inmate populations and cutting costs on rehabilitation services. Privatization of public utilities like water and electricity can result in higher costs and reduced maintenance for the average consumer. Companies like SpaceX threatening to cut off vital services because they don't get their way in a government contract can impair public interest. Vital public services and the stewardship of resources intended for the common good must remain firmly in the hands of transparent, democratically-elected government entities answerable to the people. Privatization erodes this fundamental tenet and represents an unacceptable abdication of the government's core obligations to its citizens. This pernicious practice must be halted and reversed to safeguard the public interest.
