An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Concerns of a local Social Worker

After last weekend, listening to you speak at the art competition, I was heartened. You struck me as a man of ethics, bred from your years of scouting to the point of even earning your Eagle.  I came away with the belief of you being a man we can approach who is level headed and reasonable. That left me feeling much better about the state of things. I do have a few concerns. I am left wondering if you are going to stand back and allow the erosion of our constitution through no due process, disappearing people and sending them to a heinous regime’s prison in El Salvador known for torture.  That is so anti-American on so many levels. That is the type of prison we usually fight against because of humanitarian issues. Not to mention abducting people because of the color of their skin and the tattoos on their bodies,  putting them in a plane and whisking them off in the middle of the night. Where is the  due process? That’s something Nazis do. Conservative former Federal Judge J. Michael Luttig said, ‘ A constitutional crisis is brewing over the president’s refusal to abide by court orders over deportations.”  Not only is the president’s behavior anti-American but it is also anti-constitution. Another major concern is that I work with low income children and adults with disabilities. I am so worried about them not being able to receive the care they need if the House does not fund Medicaid. Another issue with not funding Medicaid is that we will lose rural hospitals and clinics. A civilization is judged on how well it takes care of the less fortunate. There are many needy people in East Texas. I believe the poverty level here rivals the poverty level in Appalachia. I am wondering , how well will the 119th Congress  be judged by history? There are many people, especially children who are food insecure in this region. Cutting funding for the food bank here will have drastic effects, including long-term developmental effects in children. The brain won’t develop adequately. They will not be able to learn, grow, develop and be educable as well as they could be if they had adequate nutrition. There are a myriad of concerns in East Texas. From my prospective as a social worker,  currently , these are the most pressing issues. I appreciate your concern for our children.  It was obvious in your presentation last week. I value having a legislator who holds our children in high esteem. Thank you for that.
