An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Demand justification for the cuts to the Department of Education

The Department of Education plays a vital role in ensuring equal access to education and supporting vulnerable student populations, including low-income students and those with disabilities. Laying off nearly half of the department's workforce undermines its ability to fulfill these crucial responsibilities effectively. It is concerning that key offices like Title I and the office overseeing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) have been significantly impacted. Congress must demand transparency and accountability from the administration regarding these workforce reductions. A thorough explanation is needed detailing which positions were eliminated, the justification for deeming them unnecessary, and a clear plan for how the department will continue to serve the needs of students and uphold its legal obligations without compromising its mission.
