Urge Rejection of Pete Serrano as U.S. Attorney for Eastern Washington

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the nomination of Pete Serrano as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington. I urge you to use your influence to prevent his confirmation and support Senator Patty Murray's decision to block this nomination through the Senate's blue slip process. Pete Serrano, appointed as interim U.S. Attorney on August 6, 2025, has demonstrated extreme right-wing views that are incompatible with the impartial and just application of federal law. His stances on critical issues such as the January 6th insurrection, abortion rights, and gun control are deeply concerning and out of step with the values of many Washingtonians. The position of U.S. Attorney is crucial, overseeing a staff of approximately 79 prosecutors, civil litigators, and support personnel. It requires an individual who can uphold the law fairly and without ideological bias. Serrano's background as a conservative Republican and former mayor of Pasco raises serious questions about his ability to serve all constituents equally under the law. Senator Murray's use of the blue slip process is a legitimate and important check on executive appointments. This longstanding Senate tradition allows our elected representatives to ensure that federal nominees are suitable for their respective districts. Despite criticism from some quarters, including former President Trump who called it "old and outdated," the blue slip process remains supported by senators from both parties, including Republicans Chuck Grassley and Thom Tillis. Time is of the essence in this matter. Serrano's 120-day interim appointment will expire on December 9, 2025, if he is not confirmed. I urge you to act swiftly to prevent his confirmation and work towards identifying a more suitable candidate for this critical position. The U.S. Attorney's office must remain a bastion of justice and equality under the law. Appointing someone with Serrano's extreme views would undermine public trust in federal law enforcement and potentially jeopardize the fair administration of justice in Eastern Washington. I ask that you stand with Senator Murray in opposing this nomination and protect the integrity of our federal justice system.
