Protect the Postal Service from Political Takeover and Safeguard Voting by Mail

I write to urge you to strongly oppose former President Trump’s attempted takeover of the U.S. Postal Service. In February 2025, numerous reports revealed that Trump planned to issue an executive order to fire the USPS Board of Governors and fold the agency under the Commerce Department, led by Secretary Howard Lutnick. That action would overturn decades of postal independence legislation. This move poses a grave threat to free and fair access to voting by mail, especially in rural and underserved communities. USPS’s independence ensures reliable, affordable delivery of ballots and essential goods—messaging critical to sustaining democratic participation. Consolidating USPS under executive control—without Congressional approval—violates legal safeguards and sets a dangerous precedent, eroding institutional checks and balances. The Board’s intent to sue the administration reflects the high-stakes legal concerns. I respectfully call upon you to: 1. Condemn any executive effort that undermines USPS’s independence. 2. Support legislation to codify USPS governance protections and voting access safeguards. 3. Ensure federal oversight and transparency, especially around mail-in voting operations. Preserving USPS’s integrity protects all Americans’ access to essential services and participation in our democracy. Please safeguard this critical institution from political interference.
