I am writing to express grave concerns about the continued attacks on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by the Trump administration. These actions, such as attempting to fire thousands of recently hired IRS workers, cutting billions from its budget, and slashing the unit that audits billionaires and the ultra-wealthy, will only embolden tax cheating among the wealthy. Research shows the wealthy are more likely to underreport their income as they have more opportunities to do so through business income, investments, and other sources not subject to third-party reporting. The voluntary compliance nature of the U.S. tax system relies heavily on honest self-reporting by taxpayers. Undermining the IRS's ability to enforce tax laws through audits and oversight will lead to a surge in tax evasion, especially among high-income individuals and businesses. The potential revenue loss from increased tax cheating is staggering – the IRS estimates Americans already underpay over $600 billion in taxes annually. This shortfall will inevitably lead to calls for cuts to critical government services that benefit the middle class and those in need. Alternatively, it may force higher tax rates on compliant taxpayers to make up the difference. Either outcome is unacceptable and profoundly unfair to the vast majority who diligently pay their taxes. I urge you to reject any further attempts to weaken the IRS and tax enforcement. Instead, the agency should be provided with the resources and support necessary to crack down on tax evasion by the wealthy, narrowing the unacceptable "tax gap." Robust tax compliance ensures a level playing field and the ability to fund vital public priorities.
