An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reject Voter Suppression Through SAVE Act Citizenship Requirements

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The SAVE Act's strict proof-of-citizenship requirement for voter registration would create an unnecessary burden, especially for those whose current legal name does not match their birth certificate due to life events like divorce. As someone in that situation, I worry the process of acquiring supplemental documentation to verify my citizenship would be overly cumbersome and could disenfranchise otherwise eligible voters. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud from non-citizens that would justify erecting such obstacles to the fundamental right to vote. Rather than safeguarding elections, this bill seems likely to suppress voter participation, particularly among already marginalized groups like married individuals who changed their names. I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and any measures that would make it harder for legitimate U.S. citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
