I understand the Texas Senate is proposing a Teacher raise structure that is very unfair. Teachers in districts with less than 5000 students are proposed to receive raises of $5000 for 3 to 4 years of experience and $10,000 for 5+ years of experience. Teachers in districts of 5000 students or more, like our local Lufkin and Nacogdoches districts, are proposed to receive raises of half that amount at $2500 and $5500. All of our teachers work hard and deserve the same pay increase. And it is extremely unfair that schools with the larger population are getting half the pay raise.
I know Senator Nichols you are a grand supporter public education. And I want to thank you for that! Please advocate for our schools on the unfairness of this proposal.
I would also like to note that our public schools have not received an increase in funding through the basic allotment since 2019. Our effective teacher pay has decreased when considering the past four years of inflation and increases in cost of living.
