An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Defend press freedoms and whistleblower rights

482 so far! Help us get to 500 signers!

I strongly urge protecting whistleblowers, journalists, and the First Amendment rights that underpin a free press. The potential misuse of the Espionage Act to criminalize the publication of information in the public interest poses a grave threat to government transparency and democratic accountability. While leaks that genuinely jeopardize national security must be handled appropriately, the administration appears intent on an overly broad interpretation that would enable suppressing any unflattering reporting. This is a direct attack on the media's vital watchdog role. We cannot allow this disturbing overreach that would enable concealing misconduct and wrongdoing from the American people. I call on you to zealously defend press freedoms and the rights of sources who expose issues of public concern. Unchecked retaliation against whistleblowers and journalists undermines the system of checks and balances essential to a healthy democracy.
