An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Preserve USPS independence, ensure free elections and service

5 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

The U.S. Postal Service has operated as an independent agency since the 1970 Postal Reorganization Act, which allowed it to be self-funded primarily through customer revenues rather than taxpayer dollars. Maintaining this independence is crucial to ensuring the Postal Service can carry out its vital role of delivering mail, packages, and election ballots to all Americans in an efficient and nonpartisan manner. Bringing the Postal Service under the control of a political appointee in the Commerce Department risks jeopardizing its ability to remain free from undue influence and potential interference, especially when it comes to handling election mail during future voting cycles. Preserving the Postal Service's autonomy is essential to upholding a core democratic function and public service that millions rely upon.
