Defend marriage equality and Obergefell v. Hodges precedent

The Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges recognized the fundamental right of same-sex couples to marry nationwide. Recent efforts by lawmakers in several states to urge the Court to revisit and overturn this landmark ruling are deeply concerning. The freedom to marry is a core constitutional liberty that should not be subject to partisan politics or personal biases. Polling consistently shows a solid majority of Americans support marriage equality. Obergefell was decided nearly a decade ago, and same-sex marriages have been performed across the country since then without issue. Undoing this established precedent would sow confusion, upend thousands of existing marriages, and deprive LGBTQ+ Americans of a basic civil right enjoyed by their fellow citizens. The Court should reject any invitations to reconsider Obergefell, which was correctly decided. Stable precedent allows the law to be applied fairly and predictably. Relitigating this settled issue would undermine the Court's legitimacy and the equality principles enshrined in our Constitution. The lives and dignity of millions should not be disrupted to serve a divisive political agenda.
