Tariffs were paid out of OUR pockets. Where are our refunds?

Amazon just got $600 million back from Donald Trump's tariffs. Regular Americans, the ones who actually paid them, might get a few cents. The Supreme Court struck down Trump's sweeping tariffs in February in a 6-3 decision, ruling he had no legal authority to impose them using an emergency-powers law meant for national security threats. The Court's opinion was blunt about who actually got hit. It said the tariffs reached "into the pockets of the people," and that only Congress, not the president, holds that power. That ruling triggered one of the largest refund operations in modern American history, roughly $166 billion owed back to the companies that paid the import taxes. The Treasury alone paid out $49.2 billion in June. Here is the part that shows who the tariffs were really for. When companies pay an import tax, they pass it to you at checkout. That is how tariffs work, and it is why Trump got furious in 2025 when Amazon considered showing customers the tariff cost right next to the price. He personally called Jeff Bezos to complain, and Amazon dropped the idea. The cost stayed hidden, and you paid it. Now the money is coming back, and watch how little of it reaches you. Amazon disclosed a $600 million refund on its earnings call this week. It says it will return money to shoppers only in a "limited set of circumstances," where it can trace a specific charge to a specific customer. Everything it cannot trace, it keeps. A class-action lawsuit in Seattle had already accused Amazon of deliberately dragging its feet on seeking these refunds, alleging the company wanted to "curry favor with Trump" by leaving your money in the government's hands. Amazon started moving only after it got caught. Trump promised the tariffs would punish foreign nations and shrink a national debt now past $37 trillion. The tariffs did neither. Foreign countries did not pay them, you did. The debt did not shrink. And the one concrete result the courts could enforce was ordering the government to refund the illegal money, most of which lands back with corporations, not with the shoppers who actually footed the bill. He said the foreigners would pay. The Court said we did.
