I am writing to urge you to support a thorough investigation into the Department of Justice's mishandling of FBI documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, and to pursue impeachment proceedings if the investigation reveals deliberate misconduct or obstruction.
The DOJ recently released three FBI memos totaling more than 50 pages that were initially withheld from public disclosure despite a law passed by Congress in November compelling the department to release all material from its Epstein investigations. The DOJ claimed these documents were "incorrectly coded as duplicative," but this explanation raises serious questions about whether officials deliberately concealed evidence or engaged in a cover-up. NPR first reported that indexes and serial numbers indicated these interview summaries from 2019 were missing from the DOJ database.
This week, a House committee voted to subpoena Attorney General Pam Bondi to answer questions about the DOJ's handling of the Epstein files, with Republicans joining Democrats in a bipartisan vote. This rare unity demonstrates the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability. When federal agencies fail to comply with congressional mandates and withhold documents from investigations into sex trafficking, it undermines public trust and the rule of law.
The memos contain FBI interviews with a woman who made allegations against Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein dating to the 1980s. Regardless of the ultimate credibility of these specific claims, Congress and the American people have a right to access all documents as required by law. The selective withholding of files, whether intentional or negligent, demands consequences.
I ask that you support a comprehensive investigation into who made the decision to withhold these documents and why. If evidence emerges of deliberate obstruction or abuse of power, I urge you to support impeachment proceedings against the responsible officials. Government transparency and accountability must be non-negotiable.
