An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Demand Oversight of the Key Bridge Rebuild

170 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!

The Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement has nearly tripled in cost. The original estimate was $1.8 billion. The Maryland Transportation Authority revised it to $4.3-5.2 billion in November 2025. Then in April 2026, the state dropped its primary contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure, after internal estimates reportedly reached $9 billion. The project is 100% federally funded, has no builder for its main construction phase, and will not open before late 2030. Six workers died when the bridge collapsed in March 2024. They deserve a safe replacement. But a project that has tripled in cost with no contractor and a completion date past the next presidential term needs real oversight. Investigate how a $1.8 billion project became a $9 billion liability. Federal taxpayers are paying every dollar. Congress has a responsibility to ensure this money is spent well.
