An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Ensure fair process for Social Security beneficiaries abroad

9 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

The abrupt suspension of Social Security payments for Americans living abroad due to missing paperwork is deeply concerning. While maintaining eligibility verification is understandable, abruptly cutting off benefits without proper notice or opportunity to rectify the situation raises serious issues of due process and financial hardship. Many beneficiaries rely solely on these payments for their living expenses. Suddenly losing this vital income source could push vulnerable individuals into poverty and insecurity through no fault of their own. There must be a more reasonable process that provides adequate notification and a grace period to submit required documents before terminating benefits. This situation calls for a review of procedures to ensure Social Security payments are not disrupted unilaterally, jeopardizing the wellbeing of law-abiding beneficiaries. A fair system should allow reasonable time to provide updated information when requested. Cutting people off from their hard-earned Social Security with no recourse is unacceptable mistreatment of a vulnerable population. The administration must swiftly address this issue and prevent such draconian actions against recipients in the future.
