Today I’m writing to urge your support for S. 898 to restore funding for The United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
As tensions continue in the Middle East region, it is crucial for Congress to prioritize humanitarian aid and support organizations providing life-saving assistance on the ground.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency has been a stabilizing force in Gaza, the West Bank, and surrounding areas, delivering essential aid and services to millions of Palestinians.
However, due to recent political decisions in the US, UNRWA's funding has been halted, severely impacting its ability to carry out its vital work.
This bill is a reintroduction of the UNRWA Funding Emergency Restoration Act (S.898) and it presents an opportunity to restore critical funding to this indispensable agency. UNRWA's infrastructure remains the backbone of humanitarian efforts in the region, ensuring the delivery of food, healthcare, and other essential services to those in dire need. Without it, the various charitable organizations cannot mount a concerted effort to help refugees and feed them in shelters, and provide other necessary care.
In a region mired in complex political tensions, humanitarian assistance must remain apolitical and focused on addressing human suffering. It’s about saving lives. Congress needs to send a message that we are a humanitarian nation, not a nation of thugs and bullies run by a few corrupt men.
Support S.898. Thank you.
