An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose Efforts to Redefine or Limit 14th Amendment Citizenship Rights

19 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am writing to you today as a constituent and a concerned citizen to express my strong opposition to any executive or legislative efforts to narrow the scope of birthright citizenship as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. As you are aware, the Supreme Court is currently hearing arguments in Trump v. Barbara regarding the administration’s attempt to redefine "subject to the jurisdiction thereof." I believe that any move to deny citizenship to children born on U.S. soil—regardless of their parents' status—is a departure from over 125 years of settled legal precedent established in United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898). Beyond the humanitarian concerns, I urge you to consider the following: - Constitutional Integrity: The 14th Amendment was designed to ensure that citizenship is a matter of objective geography, not political favor or parental status. Allowing any administration to reinterpret the Constitution via executive order sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the stability of all our protected rights. - Economic and Administrative Stability: Creating a stateless class of people born in Ohio who cannot legally work, pay taxes, or participate in society would create an avoidable bureaucratic and economic crisis for our state. - Legislative Independence: I ask that you oppose the "Birthright Citizenship Act" and similar measures. Congress should act as a check on executive overreach, not as a rubber stamp for policies that attempt to bypass the constitutional amendment process. The guarantee of birthright citizenship is a cornerstone of American identity. I ask that you stand in defense of the Constitution and oppose any measures—legislative or otherwise—that seek to dilute the 14th Amendment. I look forward to hearing your position on this critical matter and will be following your votes closely as we approach the 2026 elections.
