I strongly condemn the decision to remove references to transgender and queer individuals from the Stonewall National Monument website. This act of erasure distorts historical facts and dishonors the immense contributions of transgender people, especially transgender women of color, who were at the forefront of the Stonewall riots and the broader LGBTQ+ rights movement. Attempting to cis-wash or rewrite LGBTQ+ history by denying the existence and roles of transgender individuals is reprehensible. The Stonewall National Monument exists to educate the public about this pivotal event and the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. Censoring mentions of transgender and queer people undermines the educational purpose of the monument and the National Park Service's mission to share the full, inclusive history of America. The Trump administration's regressive policies targeting transgender rights do not change the facts of history or erase the transgender community's integral role. I urge the immediate restoration of the full, accurate historical descriptions on the Stonewall website, including the words "transgender" and "queer." The National Park Service must honor its commitment to truthfully represent all those who participated in and continue the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. Attempting to whitewash this history is a deplorable act of discrimination that warrants forceful condemnation.
