An open letter to the U.S. Congress

EUROPE LOOKS STRONG. AMERICA DOES NOT

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

More media pablum on Monday’s WH meeting with Ukraine’s president and European leaders. Summary… 1) Trump will gauge Putin's actions over next two weeks. Sure why not. Trump seems lost in a time loop of ‘2 weeks.’ 2) Trump says Putin faces 'rough situation' if no deal on Ukraine. Yeah it’s been rough for him so far. 3) Zelenskiy hails summit with Trump as a step towards peace. If effusive thanks could win the war, Zelenskyy should get the Nobel Peace prize. 4) Russia launches largest attack this month amid peace talks. Putin has the cards. 5) Uncertainty over US security guarantees for Ukraine. Why the uncertainty? Could it be because America has become an untrustworthy ally? Led by a man with no idea what ‘guarantee’ actually means? Some behind the scenes reporting. At the meeting Trump still seemed convinced that his face-to-face with Putin was a success. Ask his staff. If success is Putin being welcomed in the States with open arms then Mission Accomplished. Trump told French president Macron about his plan to set up a trilateral meeting, and added: “I think he [Putin] wants to make a deal for me, you understand that? As crazy as it sounds.” Crazy yes. European leaders again tried to state the obvious by reiterating that Putin started the war and could stop it at any time. And pressed Trump to back a ceasefire that he had originally demanded. Instead Trump repeated Russian talking points, complained about how poorly he is treated, said he had ended six wars, insisted that voting in the US is full of fraud, and suggested he would cancel the 2028 elections. He appeared to completely forget about the “severe consequences” he had promised against Russia, instead claiming he and Putin had “largely agreed” on land transfers and security guarantees for Ukraine. By the late afternoon, the president was unable to recognize Finland’s president, who was sitting directly across the table from him. “President Stubb of Finland,” Trump said. Looking around, Trump continued: “And he’s uh, he’s somebody that, where are we here? Huh? Where? Where?” Stubb said, “I’m right here.” Trump focused on him and answered: “Oh. You look better than I’ve ever seen you look.” Then he seems to have decided he needed a lifeline in the middle of their meeting. So he paused, for 40 minutes, to call Putin. European leaders were not present for that conversation. Later Trump shared a meme of himself with a large lion and the words “Peace through Strength. Anyone can make war, but only most courageous [sic] can make peace.” He posted memes claiming he is the “best president…in American history” and the “G[reatest] O[f] A[ll] T[ime], a “legend.” In response, Russia Today trolled Trump’s “peace through strength” boast by posting a video of an armored vehicle first going slowly on a road and then dramatically speeding up. The vehicle was flying both Russian and US flags. You happy with all the great deals so far?
