Urgent Call for Enhanced Railroad Safety and Accountability Measures

I am writing to express my strong support for increased regulation and accountability within the railroad industry. As an advocate for rail-based transportation, both for freight and passenger travel, I believe in its potential for efficiency and environmental benefits. However, the current state of the industry calls for significant improvements. Recent steps taken by the U.S. Department of Transportation highlight the urgent need for enhanced safety measures. Despite the reduction in derailments thanks to new safety rules, the fact remains that over a thousand derailments occur annually. This statistic is alarming and underscores the importance of further action. There's growing bipartisan support for expanding and strengthening rules governing high-hazardous shipments, including high-hazard flammable trains (HHFT). Additionally, increasing the use of electronically controlled pneumatic brakes (ECP) will dramatically improve the safety of rail travel. It is essential to overcome industry opposition and ensure these regulations are robust and effectively enforced. Lastly, the phase-in of safer (DOT 117) tank cars for carrying hazardous materials needs acceleration. While the 2015 FAST Act set a deadline of 2029, the original 2015 HHFT Rule required this by 2025. Congress has the opportunity to hasten this vital safety measure, and I urge you to support efforts in this direction. In addition to safety concerns, the reduction in the workforce within the industry has raised serious questions about the ability to maintain and improve these crucial transportation networks. It is imperative that we protect our rail workers, especially those who bravely report safety issues. The adoption of new inspection technologies and the expedited introduction of safer tank cars are steps in the right direction, but more needs to be done. I urge you to support initiatives that strengthen railroad safety and accountability. This includes ensuring paid sick leave for rail workers, a measure that not only supports the workforce but also contributes to overall safety. The partnership between the U.S. Department of Transportation, Congress, and rail companies is crucial in this endeavor. Together, we can work towards a safer, more reliable, and efficient rail system that benefits everyone. Thank you for considering my views on this important matter.
