I am writing to express my deep concern over President Trump's recent actions regarding the use of military forces on domestic soil, particularly as a show of force in areas he deems ‘lawless’ such as what we’ve seen in Los Angeles and now the District of Columbia.
This misuse of our armed forces not only violates long-standing principles governing domestic military deployment but also poses a significant threat to our democratic norms and the rights of American citizens, especially in exercising the right of free speech and the right to protest peacefully.
Everything Trump does is a danger overreach of the Executive Branch. It inappropriately frames immigration issues as military threats, potentially paving the way for invoking the Insurrection Act to bring National Guard troops under federal control. This action is an unnecessary and harmful escalation of the use of military force in any kind of domestic enforcement — for which they are not trained.
Our legal framework clearly delineates the proper, limited role of the military on U.S. soil. The deployment of National Guard troops should remain under state control (Title 32) rather than federal control (Title 10) in most circumstances. However, we've seen an alarming increase in the deployment of federalized National Guard troops for no suitable purpose other than as to quell free speech, peaceful protest and back up barbarous immigration enforcement.
As my representative, I urge you to take immediate action. We need robust Congressional oversight and transparency to protect city residents and uphold the principles that govern the domestic use of our military.
Please work to:
1. Investigate the legality and necessity of the President's recent actions.
2. Oppose any attempt to invoke the Insurrection Act for border control purposes.
3. Ensure that the rights of all communities are protected and that their voices are heard in this process.
4. Demand transparency from the administration regarding its plans for military deployment on U.S. soil.
The misuse of our military for domestic purposes is a slippery slope that could lead to further erosion of our civil liberties. It also puts our nations honorably serving sons and daughters in the role of tools of oppression, a weapon used against civilians, an immoral and likely illegal role.
Our democracy and the well-being of our citizens depend on your swift and decisive action. Thank you.
