An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Urgent: Oppose S.5, The Laken Riley Act
4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to urge you to oppose the passage of S.5, the Laken Riley Act. While the killing of Laken Riley was tragic and unnecessary, as currently written, the bill fails to include crucial safeguards and could have unintended consequences that harm vulnerable communities instead of providing meaningful protection.
Even some of the bill’s original supporters, including Senators Kaine, Bennet, Hickenlooper, King, Luján, Merkley, Shaheen, Van Hollen, Warner, and Welch, have publicly stated that they cannot support the bill without fundamental changes. They recognize that the bill, in its present form, is flawed and risks broadening the scope of criminalization, potentially targeting individuals who should not be punished, and not focusing adequately on support and protection for survivors. Ultimately, it would undermine efforts to protect those it aims to help.
You can view their proposed changes here: https://www.kaine.senate.gov/press-releases/kaine-bennet-hickenlooper-king-lujan-merkley-shaheen-van-hollen-warner-and-welch-unveil-amendment-to-improve-laken-riley-act
These Senators have proposed a range of improvements that address concerns about overreach, unnecessary criminalization, and inadequate protection for survivors of trafficking. Without these vital changes, the bill risks causing more harm than good. For the sake of children and families, I urge you to carefully consider these rejected amendments and stand against S.5, the Laken Riley Act.
Thank you for your time and attention to this critical matter. I trust that you will make the right decision in ensuring that any legislation passed is both effective and just.
