New research shows that exposure to ozone pollution during pregnancy increases the risk of children having intellectual disabilities. This underscores the urgent need for stronger emissions standards and enforcement measures to protect maternal and child health in our state. The current mitigation tactics are inadequate, as evidenced by Utah's failure to meet EPA ozone standards since 2015. We cannot afford to ignore federal regulations when the well-being of vulnerable populations is at stake. To safeguard our children's development, comprehensive action is imperative. Expanding public transportation, implementing no-drive days, tightening industrial emission controls, and restoring the Great Salt Lake levels are crucial steps. These measures will not only improve air quality but also demonstrate our commitment to creating a healthy environment for all families. The potential long-term consequences of inaction are too grave to ignore. Decisive action must be taken to reduce ozone pollution and prioritize the health of Utah's mothers and children.
