An open letter to the U.S. Congress

AT WHAT POINT DOES HUMANITY SUPERSEDE THE POWER OF THE STATE? DOES IT?

2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Yesterday in CA, during an ICE raid at a farm where marijuana was being grown, a man was seriously injured by a fall from a multistory building. He later died from his injuries. A judge in LA ordered the LAPD to stop assaulting, detaining, and using nonlethal ammunition against journalists who are covering protests. And to stop limiting their movements. Also a judge in the Central District of California has directed DHS/ICE to stop making arrests by using appearance, accent, and type of work to arrest people. All clear violations of the 4th Amendment. ICE had been active in terrorizing people simply going about their lives. Rounding up people at Home Depot, at bus stops, at car washes, at any location with the common denominator of brown-skinned people. They are armed, masked, anonymous, not showing justification for detaining anyone, no warrants, no nothing other than racial profiling. Sweeping up innocents, American citizens, or anyone caught in the crossfire. Putting people in traumatic circumstances, with little due process, or access to family or legal representation. And why? The Trump administration would say that it’s solely in the name of getting bad guys off the street. Bold hypocrisy given the stats we read daily that the majority of those detained have no criminal history. At all. This is the real reason…Trump’s post on his social media platform where he calls on immigration officials to do “all in their power” to achieve “the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History” by expanding efforts to detain and deport people in LA and other cities that are “the core of Democrat power.” And…Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, viewed as the architect of this exercise in cruelty, responded to the judge on X… "A communist judge in LA has ordered ICE to report directly to her and radical left NGOs — not the president. This is another act of insurrection against the United States and its sovereign people." These are not sentiments worthy of American leaders. They are heartless in their intent. Lawless in their actions. And insulting to we the people. Where does the line between enforcing US law and utter inhumanity lie? Wherever the line is, the first Trump administration had already crossed it by ripping kids away from parents. Now they go even further. Because they realize no one who could stop them then, would even try to stop them now. And that they could do pretty much anything they wanted in the name of immigration policy. But it seems the judiciary, confronted daily by the blatant disregard for laws and our Constitution by the Trump administration, is not being as compliant as the GOP Congress. They still take their responsibility to the country seriously. History’s condemnation is coming. Just as it has for other governments that rounded up people and persecuted them in the name of the State. And if you don’t believe it, or worse don’t care, you deserve your place in condemnation.
