An open letter to the U.S. Congress

THIS IS NOT HELPING

3 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas. As if it weren’t already obvious, we’ve hit any version of a writer or movie director’s version of a futuristic society. Brazil. 1984. Idiocracy. Even Doctor Strangelove. They all ring true. The movement that today proves this is that of competing mandates, both for, and against vaccines. One side is adamant that mandates are necessary to protect the vulnerable among us, while also providing greater safety from Covid spread for everyone else, particularly those who are either ineligible, or unable, to receive a vaccine. The other side argues that mandates step on our personal freedoms. So they are constantly proposing mandates against mandates. I just really wish someone would explain to me why some vaccine mandates are okay. While others are not. In Texas we require a whole litany of vaccines in order to go to school. Why is this okay? Logic would seem to suggest that particularly during a pandemic, it might be okay to require vaccinations? But logic goes out the window when politics get involved. So now, of course, one of my Texas senators is busily pushing legislation at the federal level to mandate schools to not mandate Covid vaccinations. I’m a big believer in personal responsibility. But when the concept of personal responsibility has been corrupted with disinformation, all in the name of politics, something else is needed to protect society as a whole. I’m sure Senator Cruz has had his children vaccinated. And if he has not, why the heck not? Doesn’t personal responsibility also entail taking care of children who are not able to take care of themselves? So if you don’t choose to take care of your children by getting them vaccinated during a pandemic, when you surely have them vaccinated for other things as a requirement to attend schools, is that taking a personal responsibility stand? Or is it something else? Again, personal responsibility is how a society works. I for one am tired of having to cater to the unvaccinated among us. I’m tired of my son in the ER having to deal with people who did not have to get sick and die. We’re all tired of it. But we’re also tired of politics dictating public health during a pandemic. I wish you would all just stop it.
