I am contacting you today to urge you to vote no on H.R. 30, the “Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act” introduced by Representative Nancy Mace. As an advocate for women’s equality, I urge you to vote no on this bill.
This bill passed the House of Representatives on January 16th and was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 17th. To truly prevent violence against women, it is imperative this bill does not pass.
Despite its misleading title, H.R. 30 will not make women safer. Instead, H.R. 30 will harm our nation’s very founding ideals. H.R. 30 is problematic in that it calls for immigration enforcement measures against people who have not been convicted in a court of any particular crime. Furthermore, H.R. 30 will harm immigrant women who are survivors of sexual and domestic abuse. H.R. 30 will make it easier for undocumented survivors of domestic violence to be labeled as perpetrators and deported. The bill has no exceptions for survivors who fight back in self-defense against abusers, or are accused by their abusers of violence themselves.
H.R. 30 is one of many bad and misleading bills being pushed through Congress right now to scapegoat immigrants and endanger communities across the country. We know that a law that targets immigrants is a law that hurts all of us.
As an American concerned for the safety of women, I urge you to vote no on H.R. 30.
