An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (Ga. only)

Investigate Georgia election officials' concerning voting rights overreach

I applaud your call to investigate whether members of the State Election Board have overstepped their authority in enacting new rules that could undermine the integrity of elections in Georgia. As elected officials, you have a duty to safeguard the democratic process and ensure voting rights are protected for all citizens. The concerning changes implemented by appointees Johnston, King, and Jeffares make it easier to challenge election results without justification. This appears to align disturbingly with former President Trump's efforts to overturn Georgia's 2020 election outcome based on unsubstantiated claims of fraud. Enabling such challenges risks sowing further chaos and disenfranchising legitimate voters. While the board argues the new rules merely align with state law, the timing and statements praising the appointees raise troubling questions about their motivation and independence from partisan interference. As Governor Kemp rightly recognizes, there is uncertainty around his authority to remove them. However, a full investigation is warranted given the grave implications for voting rights and democratic norms. I urge you to thoroughly scrutinize this situation and, should the probe confirm the board members exceeded their mandate to facilitate partisan aims, take appropriate action to uphold the will of Georgia voters and the sanctity of future elections. Preserving trust in the electoral process must be the paramount priority.
