I am writing as your constituent to express my strong opposition to House Bill 249, which would impose unreasonable restrictions on drag performances and potentially affect a wide range of theatrical expression. This bill not only poses a threat to artistic freedom and First Amendment rights, but it also represents a troubling, indirect attack on the LGBTQ+ community.
Drag is a long-standing and legitimate form of performance art that spans comedy, dance, music, and storytelling. To single it out in legislation is not only discriminatory but sets a dangerous precedent that could spill into broader efforts to censor or criminalize creative expression. What concerns me even more is the vagueness of the bill’s language, which could easily be weaponized to suppress other forms of theater or performance art under subjective standards.
Rather than addressing any real public safety concerns, HB 249 appears to be part of a wider effort to stigmatize LGBTQ+ individuals and communities under the guise of protecting children. In doing so, it risks eroding civil liberties for all Ohioans, including the rights of parents, performers, and local venues.
I urge you to oppose House Bill 249 and stand up for the rights of free expression, equal protection, and cultural diversity in our state. Ohio should not be in the business of policing art or marginalizing already vulnerable communities.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope you will consider the broader implications of this legislation and vote accordingly.
